ABOUT

We are a small group of artists and creatives with a background in sign making, traditional gold leaf on glass, fabrication, design and photography who came to Astoria in 2015. Walking regularly by the then boarded up old Y.M.C.A. we fantasized about its potential.

When we eventually were able to purchase the Y in May 2015, we were full of excitement and had no real idea where this project was going to bring us.

After clearing out the dropped ceilings, carpet and fluorescent lights, we were finally ready to start the extensive renovation efforts that eventually took us over six years. We were lucky to find the original blueprints and lots of old photographs, which have been crucial for the facade restoration.

Applying our skills in fabrication and design we opened boarded up windows and entryways, recreated original details under the second story windows, welded the decorative iron work above the corner space entrance and so much more. We took it one step at a time, with an open mind, lots of naivety and the immense support of family, friends and skilled trades people.

We’re very proud that we’ve been able to bring this building, which played such an important role in the community of Astoria, back to being a contributing architectural feature in the downtown area. Full of life and creativity, for people to enjoy again.

In 2017 we were awarded the Diamonds in the Rough Grant by the State of Oregon to help with our restoration efforts. In 2020 we received the Oregon Excellence Award by the State of Oregon for our excellence in restoring a nearly abandoned building and in 2021 the Dr. Edward Harvey Historic Preservation Award by the City of Astoria for commercial building restoration.
