HISTORY

The Astoria Y.M.C.A. was built in 1914 and designed by Portland architects MacNaughton and Raymond. It served as a place of recreation and education for Astorians until the Y closed in the 1980’s.

Original blue prints we found in the building showing the West Elevation and all it’s details.

In the early years the Y was critical in offering temporary lodging to people moving to or passing through Astoria, as well as youth development programs through a wide variety of activities. The top floor apartment used to house 13 dormitories around the perimeter, with one shared bathroom. Today you can still see where the beds were situated by the marks on the refinished fir flooring.

These original double doors were turned into a half boarded up single door by previous ownership.
We remade the double door entrance to what is now Gathered Bakeshop & Market’s entrance.

One of our favorite stories about the building is how it was saved during the big fire by a bucket brigade of kids hauling water from the pool to the rooftop. The 1920 fire tragically destroyed most of Astoria’s downtown. Astoria’s YMCA building played an important role for the community during the aftermath of the fire.

Lots of people who grew up in Astoria have learned to swim in the pool that used to be in the gym basement. The pool is covered up by a floor now but still holds lots of memories.

Most fun article from 1936: Y’s Nudists Now Sunbathe Safe On Roof, “… Y secretary, announces that enclosed quarters have been erected on the roof where men can enjoy the heat of the sun without being subjected to the view of spectators.”
